Britain's Number 2 signs for Bromley LTC (Bromley Times article)

18th March 2011

British number two James Ward has been recruited to play for Bromley Lawn Tennis and Squash Club in the Aegon Team Tennis National Championship this April.

Great Britain Davis Cup captain Leon Smith saluted the fighting spirit shown by Ward after he earned victory over Tunisia in the Europe/Africa Zone Group II with a five-set triumph against Malek Jaziri at Bolton Arena on Sunday.

His team-mates at Bromley said it would make their team ‘the strongest it has ever been’ when they compete in the Aegon cup, the biggest singles-based adult team competition in Britain.

Head coach and team member Andrew Richardson said: “It is great news for the club. He’s one of the top players at the moment. He did very well at the weekend.

“He’s going to be a big asset for the team. It will make it the strongest it has ever been.”

Bromley has won the Aegon championship the past two years. Asked what he attributed the team’s success to, the 36-year-old former Wimbledon player, Mr Richardson, said: “It’s down to hard work and the two people who have got the team together — Charles Baylis and Martin Rands.

“It’s nice to put Bromley club on the map — we have this great tennis club in the middle of the borough and it’s really positive that it has such a strong team on a national scale.”

The Aegon league runs from April to July culminating in the National Finals.

In 2009 Mr Ward, as world number 271, became the first British player since Tim Henman in 1995 to win an ATP Challenger Tour event on clay, beating Carsten Ball in Sarasota, Florida.

Bromley former team manager Charles Baylis said: “It’s great to have such a high profile player at the club.”
