Bromley Lawn Tennis Club suffer crippling defeat

24th May 2011

At their match against David Lloyd Raynes Park on Sunday, Bromley LTC suffered a major set back in the defence of their AEGON National Team Tennis Title, losing 6-0.

Bromley were looking to build on their winning performance the previous week to secure their place at the National Finals in Bournemouth in July. Unfortunately they were once again struggling to field a strong and fully fit squad for the tie.

Heading Bromley’s line up this week was Jamie Delgado, Britain’s former top 5 player who achieved a career high world singles ranking of 121. Still currently ranked 75 in the world at doubles, Bromley had great expectations for Jamie’s singles match against his old national training squad sparring partner Lee Childs, but unfortunately the 34 year old was still suffering with a bout of flu and could only manage a below par performance, losing to Childs 6-2, 6-3.

Nick Cavaday at number two was hoping he had had recovered enough from injury and would be able to resume playing for the team on Sunday. Having made the journey to Raynes Park Nick’s rib injury was far too painful to even attempt to go on court and he had to concede his match 6-0, 6-0 against Tom Burn.

Tom Higgins and Rob Carter were playing at three and four for Bromley but the super fast indoor carpet courts proved a factor in their games on the day. Higgins eventually lost to Neil Bamford 6-3, 6-4 and Carter went down 6-4, 6-0 to Tim Patient.

Going into the two doubles rubbers 4-0 down meant that the match was technically over. Delgado and Higgins paired up to play Bamford and Childs but lost their doubles rubber 6-2, 6-3.

Mike Tuson, Bromley’s former club singles champion, stepped into the fray once again to replace the injured Cavaday and paired up with Rob Carter against Tim Patient and James Lloyd (the nephew of David and John Lloyd). Whilst the Bromley pair put up a good fight in the first set, they were ultimately dismissed 6-3, 6-0.

Speaking after the match Rob Searle, Bromley’s Team Captain, was bitterly disappointed. “This is a devastating blow to our 2011 title campaign. Having lost two ties this season now, our last two matches have both become ‘must win’ matches. With 5 of the 8 teams in our group all on the same number of points, our own fate may also be decided by how the other teams do over the next few weeks. We will need convincing wins against our last two opponents to boost our rubbers and sets percentages as at this stage we could still top our group and gain automatic qualification for the finals, come second or third and have to contest a play-off, or not even qualify for the finals if we finish in fourth place or lower, which will be the first time in seven years that we haven’t been at the finals. It will be a nail biting few weeks.”

Bromley’s penultimate match is at 12pm on Sunday 5th June against Globe LTC at home. Spectators are welcome.
