Bromley LTC AEGON Team Back To Winning Ways

16th May 2011

Having suffered their first defeat in over two years the previous week at Ipswich, Bromley Lawn Tennis Club had to field a stronger team on Sunday to keep on track with the defence of their AEGON Team Tennis National Championship title. The squad didn’t disappoint, with some former highly ranked British players and a current world top 100 junior making the trip to Golders Green for the match against Chandos LTC.

At number one for Bromley this week was Nick Cavaday who achieved a British ranking of 35 during his playing career. Despite making a valiant effort playing with a rib injury, Cavaday ultimately lost his singles rubber  6-1, 7-6 to the former Ghanian number one and world top 500 player Gunther Darkey.

Tom Higgins, Britain’s former top twenty player and regular team member, competed at two in Bromley’s line up. Although his younger opponent was ranked more highly, Tom’s wealth of experience showed through and he produced yet another consistent performance for Bromley, systematically despatching Artiom Kolpakov 6-3, 6-1.

Andrew Richardson, Bromley LTC’s Head Coach and former British number 3, showed his young opponent Sizya Kivanda why he achieved a career high World Ranking of 133, beating him 6-3, 6-2.

Bromley’s Rob Carter, currently ranked 92 in the world at junior level, quickly beat Chandos’ Mehdi Aissani 6-3, 6-4 to win his singles.

Bromley went in to the doubles matches 3-1 up and victory was in sight.

Higgins and Carter paired up for their doubles rubber against Darkey and Kolpakov. Despite being behind a break of serve during most of the first set, the pair eventually came through to win 7-5, 6-4.

Oliver Freelove, Bromley LTC’s Team Manager and former British number 8, stepped in to replace the injured Nick Cavaday to partner Andrew Richardson in the doubles. Chandos also needed to substitute a player and brought in Tsatsu Segbedzie to partner Sizya Kivanda. The Chandos pair just didn’t know how to handle some of the stroke play and impressive serving from the 6’ 4”” and 6’ 7”” Bromley pair and were summarily dismissed 6-2, 6-1.

Bromley won the tie overall 5-1.

Freelove was delighted with the win after the match. “All the guys played well today and we are glad that our loss last week was just a blip. With only three ties remaining in order to qualify again for the National Finals in July we are not taking anything for granted. We have a very tough match next Sunday against David Lloyd Raynes Park, one of our closest rivals in the competition. At the moment our line up for that tie looks very good and includes Jamie Delgado who still competes full time on the circuit and today won the BNP Paribas ATP Challenger Doubles Title in Bourdeaux”.
