Bromley LTC AEGON Team off to an ideal start
5th April 2011
Last Sunday saw the start of Bromley LTC’s defence of their AEGON National Team Tennis title, the most prestigious team event in British Tennis, and they couldn’t have asked for a better start to the campaign.
Playing Esporta Racquets & Health Club from Surrey who are newly promoted to the Premier Division this season, the Bromley side showed the newbies just why they have been National Champions for the past two consecutive years, beating them 6-0.
Sean Thornley (currently ranked 12 in the country) was playing at number one in the singles for Bromley and, despite having an emergency dental appointment in the morning and playing with chronic tooth ache, quickly dispatched Casey Lyonette 7-6, 6-2.
Regular team players Matt Illingworth beat Adam Skalsky 6-1, 7-5, and Tom Higgins beat Mark Whitaker 6-1, 6-3.
Making his home debut for the club was Bromley’s Head Coach Andrew Richardson, Britain’s former number 3 and GB Davis Cup Player. The 6ft 7 inch player gave the young Yousef Stoute a tennis lesson, beating him 6-1, 6-1.
In the doubles rubbers Thornley and Illingworth paired up to quickly beat Lyonette and Skalsky 6-0, 6-2 before Thornley had to dash to the airport to catch a flight to an ATP event in Turkey.
With Higgins and Richardson beating Stoute and Whitaker 6-2, 6-2, the team walked away with an impressive 6-0 straight win.
Bromley’s Team Captain, Rob Searle, was delighted. “This is the best possible start we could have hoped for and puts us in great shape for our title defence. The home support from our members today was amazing and although we are without Andrew Richardson for our next home match on 17th April as he is running his first London Marathon, we have great depth within our squad and we are now looking forward to taking on Gosling from Welwyn Garden City”.
