Bromley LTC continue AEGON unbeaten run
18th April 2011
Last Sunday saw Bromley Lawn Tennis Club contest their second match of the 2011 AEGON Team Tennis Championships against Gosling Tennis Centre, from Welwyn Garden City.
Making his debut for the home side was former world number 84, Jean-Rene Lisnard. Still ranked 21 in France “JR”, as he is known on the circuit, still competes at ATP level and played the Monte Carlo Rolex ATP Masters only a few days earlier.
“When approached by my good friend Oliver Freelove to join the squad this year I was delighted to accept. The Bromley team and club have a great reputation and atmosphere” said the 31 year old.
Team Manager Oliver Freelove believes that Lisnard’s pedigree will be a tremendous asset to the squad and will be invaluable to the teams attempt to win their third consecutive national crown.
In the singles rubbers Lisnard quickly dispatched Gosling’s Jamie Evans 6-1, 6-2, Matt Illingworth beat Pierre Clad 6-1, 6-2 and Tom Higgins beat S Sterland 6-4, 6-2. The only hiccup was Gosling’s Matt Frost beating Nick Cavaday 6-4, 6-1 who made a valiant effort despite carrying an injury. Bromley went into the two doubles matches 3-1 up and only required one win in order to secure overall victory.
The combined talents of Lisnard and Higgins were no match for the Gosling pairing of Evans and Frost who went down 6-2, 6-2. With the injured Nick Cavaday having to sit out the doubles, Team Manager Oliver Freelove was required to dust off his racket to join Matt Illingworth in beating Clad and Sterland 7-5, 6-3.
“Having only dropped one rubber in our first two matches is a tremendous start to our title defence this season and our two year unbeaten run of 22 matches in the competition is a great reflection of the talent within the team” said Freelove. “To win in such an emphatic style was unexpected considering we were without some of our top guns this week, including Bromley’s Head Coach and Britain’s former number 3 Andrew Richardson. He was off pounding the streets of London running the marathon, but as he raised over £5,500 for SPARKS we’ll let him off this time”.
Bromley’s title campaign continues on Sunday 8th May when they will be travelling to Ipswich to hopefully add to their impressive string of victories.
